PAINTING YOUR CHILD'S ROOM: 4 TIPS TO PLEASE ANY AGE

One aspect of having a baby that many parents enjoy is designing the child's new bedroom. Before you head out to the local stores to start stocking up on necessary furnishings and adorable accessories, it's a good idea to spend some time thoughtfully planning the room's color scheme and décor.

A little forethought and research now can save you time and money later. Here are four painting and décor tips for a child's bedroom.

1. WORK WITH YOUR CHILD

Of course, a baby can't really have input in their room's decorations. However, if you're designing a room for a toddler or older child, be sure you include him or her in the planning process.

Even if their plan doesn't exactly coincide with your plan, you're much more likely to have a happy kid and a well-kept room if they have some ownership over the designs. They will also enjoy their room for longer - reducing the times you have to remake the room as they get older.

2. CREATE A BASE

Start your paint design with a well-chosen base color that will be easy to work with as the child matures. This basic shade probably shouldn't be too wild or too boring. After all, there are lots of varieties and shades of paint between wild purple walls and boring white ones.

For example, you could opt for a softer hue of many colors - such as green, blue or yellow - to create a comforting and soothing room for your baby. This base color can then be dressed up with bolder shades of paint on the trim and an accent wall. Later on, you can combine the base paint with an additional complementary color to please a tween or teenager as they mature.

When choosing a base color, you may want to stick with a satin or semi-gloss for good coverage and easy cleanup. Both types of paint are likely to last for years without a lot of touch up. For more help finding a good base paint that lasts, contact a professional painter for some expert advice.

3. ADD A MURAL

Murals are easy and inexpensive ways to add a bright focal point to any room's walls. Because you can hand paint most murals if necessary, you can create a very personalized wall covering that fits your child's eclectic tastes exactly - without spending a lot of money.

One of the easiest ways to paint a mural is to sketch the mural on a sheet of grid paper first. Once you have the design you want, measure the wall's space to create a similarly scaled grid in pencil or with string on the wall itself. Using the measurements on the page, scale up the drawing to fit the larger space. You could also use an overhead projector to project a drawn image directly onto the wall and then just trace it.

4. MAKE IT FUN

A single fun addition can spice up any wall, cover up a more neutral base color and appeal to your child's creative side. Chalkboard paints, for example, encourage your little one to express themselves by safely drawing on the actual walls. Magnetic paints can also lead to hours of fun for an artistic young one.

Fun 3D effects can also make the walls' artwork come to life. Have a space theme? Slice a toy spaceship in half and hang it on the wall for a 3D ornament. Does your child love superheroes? Attach a real fabric cape to a painted mural or self-adhesive commercial mural of their favorite character. Do they love comics? Decorate one wall with comic pages from their favorite series.

Designing a modern kid's room is more than just slapping a coat of paint on the walls. It's a chance to reflect your child's personality and build a space they can grow into for years to come.
